Working with TPS has been a great experience,” says Iulian, one of our experienced truck mechanics currently based in Rotterdam. “From the first day, everything was well organized - housing, transport, and all the paperwork. The workshop is modern, and the team is very supportive. I’ve had the chance to work on DAF trucks, which matches my background perfectly, and I’m constantly learning new things.
Last week, Iulian visited our office to collect new tools. We asked whether he would be interested in sharing his story and answering a few questions. He immediately agreed, on the condition that he could include some jokes as well. Read his full story below, and we hope you enjoy Iulian’s humor as much as we did!
Can you tell us a bit about your background? How did you become a truck mechanic?
"After finishing high school, I started working with my father in his garage, where we repaired trucks. He taught me everything he knew, and that’s where my passion began to grow. My father’s boss noticed my interest and decided to send me to Bucharest for professional training to become a certified Volvo mechanic. From there, I gained experience with many different brands and learned to work on almost every truck on the market.''
What inspired you to work in the trucking and repair industry?
''I grew up in a neighborhood near an industrial area, where I used to see big trucks passing by every day. I was fascinated by how they worked and always wanted to understand what was happening under the hood.''
How long have you been working with TPS, and how did you first get involved?
''I started working with TPS about two years ago, at the beginning of 2024.''
What does a typical day in your workshop look like?
''My day usually starts with diagnostics. Together with the manager, we decide whether to repair or replace the damaged parts. Every day is different - there’s always variety in the tasks. That’s one of the reasons I love this job. Over time, I’ve even become known as the clutch specialist.''
What are the most common truck issues you see in your work?
''The most common problems we see, especially with newer models, are related to the fuel supply system, the diesel particulate filter, and the NOx sensors.''
What’s the most challenging repair you’ve ever done - and how did you handle it?
''The toughest repair I’ve done was back in Romania. I received an old truck that everyone had given up on because the parts were worn out and replacements were impossible to find. The model was so old that there were no manuals available. It took patience, research, and a lot of creativity - but in the end, we brought it back to life.''
What are some maintenance tasks truck owners often overlook?
''Checking the tires and lights before every trip. I often see trucks with damaged tires or non-functioning lights. These are small details, but they’re crucial for safety - not just for the driver, but for everyone on the road.''
How has truck technology changed since you started in this field?
''Technology has advanced a lot. Modern trucks are now filled with electronic systems that help detect and even prevent problems. However, that also means mechanics have to constantly learn and adapt to new diagnostic tools and software.''
What’s one maintenance tip every truck owner should know?
''Never fully rely on safety systems - they can fail easily. I’m talking about lane-keeping systems, parking assistance, and other automated functions. Always stay alert and in control.''
How often should truck owners have their vehicles serviced?
''At least twice a year - once for the APK (the Dutch Periodic Technical Inspection) and another time as a general check-up, just to make sure everything runs smoothly. Modern trucks are smart and will signal when something is wrong, but regular maintenance is still key to keeping them healthy for the long term.''
What are signs that a truck might need immediate attention?
''Unusual noises coming from the engine, or when the gearbox isn’t shifting smoothly. Those are red flags that something needs attention right away.''
How can proper maintenance save money in the long run?
''By catching small issues early. Fixing a minor problem right away can prevent much bigger - and more expensive - damage later on.''
Why did you choose TPS?
''Because the recruiter was friendly, professional, and very knowledgeable. The process was clear and transparent - everything was well explained, step by step. The office team was also very supportive and always there when I needed help.''
What’s your favorite thing about TPS?
''Their professionalism, punctuality, and fairness. But more than that, they genuinely care about us as people. They understand our challenges and are always there to support us.''
Would you recommend TPS to other mechanics?
''Absolutely. The stability and reliability you get here are essential for any mechanic who wants to grow in their career.''
How do you unwind after a long day in the workshop?
''I like to cook, go to the gym, video call my family, and spend time with my colleagues. I live in a house with three other mechanics, so we often relax and have fun together after work.''
What advice would you give to young people who want to become mechanics?
''Be curious. Ask questions. Watch and learn as much as you can. Every day is an opportunity to grow.''
If a truck could talk, what would it say after a good tune-up? 😄
“I left the inspection more stressed than my driver after seeing a speed radar!”
What’s your favorite truck and why?
''Definitely the Volvo FH16 - powerful, reliable, and built to last.''
