If you want to work and live legally in the Netherlands, there are a few things that are required. Don’t worry, TPS will guide you through the steps.
1. Registration at the municipality (BSN number)
To work legally, you need a BSN number (Dutch citizen service number).
This is a personal number used for work, salary, healthcare and government services.
TPS helps you with the process, and explains what you need to bring.
2. Health insurance
Health insurance is mandatory in the Netherlands if you work here.
This is a legal requirement - even if you are healthy.
TPS will make sure you understand the options and help you arrange it correctly.
3. A valid ID or passport
You must have a valid passport or ID card.
Your employer and agencies are legally required to check this.
4. A Dutch bank account (recommended)
A Dutch bank account is not always mandatory, but it is strongly recommended.
It makes salary payments easier and helps you arrange things like rent, insurance and subscriptions.
5. Safe working standards
The Netherlands has strict safety rules in the workplace.
You may be required to follow safety instructions, wear PPE, and sometimes complete safety training (depending on your job).
This is not meant to make work harder - it’s meant to keep you safe.
The Netherlands is known for fair working conditions and clear agreements. When you start working here, you can expect:
